Con este blog pretendo compartir lo que empezó mucho tiempo atrás como un proyecto, uno de esos sueños que esperas cumplir. Así que con la entrada de este nuevo año y con los típicos própositos que nos planteamos año tras año, he decidido hacer de este proyecto una realidad. De ahí el título del blog: Living in the US. Me propongo a vivir un nueva etapa de mi vida al otro lado del océano.
Este próposito para el 2013 ya está en marcha y a través de este blog espero compartir con vosotros mi experiencia. Tras valorar varias opciones me he decidido por contratar una empresa que gestione mi solicitud de entrada al país por una duración mínima de un año donde trabajaré como au-pair (www.aupaircare.com) . El trabajo de au pair consiste en trabajar de niñera mientras resides con una família americana (host family). Como podreis pensar esta opción tiene sus ventajas e inconvenientes. Como ventajas, la família se encargará de alojarte durante toda la estancia en el país (dispondrás de tu propia habitación, mejor o peor equipada en función del nivel adquisitivo de la família); recibes remuneración por el empleo que desempeñas; así como una immersión total, vivirás con una família local por lo que el inglés será imprescindible para comunicarte y tu nivel mejorará notablemente. Como inconvenientes, vivirás en una casa ajena, con una família desconocida, con sus propias normas y costumbres, además de una cultura muy diferente a la tuya; el hecho de vivir con la família te ofrece poca intimidad; en ocasiones puede resultar dificil vivir y trabajar en el mismo lugar, así como compartir tanto tiempo con personas desconocidas. Una de las cosas que más me preocupaban al plantearme dar el paso y porfín vivir esta experiencia, era el hecho de comprometerte a permanecer durante un año. Es uno de los requisitos que te impone la agencia para tramitar tu solicitud. ¡Un año en Estados Unidos!
Podéis pensar, bueno, un año pasa volando; y la verdad es que si, pero un año lejos de tu familia, de tus amigos, de ¡todo! puede llegar a ser complicado. Para poner a prueba mis límites, decidí probar primero en Reino Unido, donde estuve durante 9 meses. Una vez comprobado que soy capaz de esto y más jejeje he pensando: ¿por qué no?
Así que os invito a vivir conmigo esta experiencia, estaré encantada de compartir con vosotros esta nueva etapa en mi vida, que como toda etapa vendrá cargada de momentos de todo tipo. Eso si, seguro que con vuestro apoyo, será más fácil.
Welcome to my life!
First of all, let me introduce myself. I’m Mireia from Barcelona (Spain),
I’m 24 years old and I would like to share with every one of you my new chapter
of life, my American experience.
I’ve always dreamt to make real one of my dreams, to live in the US and
this year I’ve decided to do it! This is why my blog’s title is Living in the US. I’m
gonna spend there one year of my life. With this blog I expect to share with
you this experience.
Two months ago, I started to look for how to do it. I found different
options, and the easiest and cheapest one was to go there to work as au pair. I
have experience of it because I did it before out-of-country. I’ve been working
as au pair in UK for a few months. So I checked out many companies and I get
one of them (www.aupaircare.com).
Have you ever listened about the au pair job?
Well, it is a good way to live in a foreign country. You will live with
a host family and working taking care of their children. It has some good and
bad points:
1.
Good:
a.
You don’t have to worry about the accommodation. The family has to offer you a private
room with all the facilities you need.
b.
The
family will pay you for the job you’re doing (childcare), they will pay you
around 200 dollars per week.
c.
You
will have to speak English all the time. My main objective is to improve my
English so it is a really good point.
2.
Anyway,
perfect is nothing:
a.
You
are gonna live with a family with another culture, different rules and well,
they are not your family so it’s quite difficult.
b.
You
are goona share a lot of time with the host family.
c.
The
agreement says: You have to be there for a year. I mean, It can be good and bad
at the same time. One year is a lot of time, so probably some days you’ll feel
so happy and some of them you can feel homesick and sad.
For me this last point is the most complicated this is why I decided to
try first living out-of-country in a nearest place. I’ve been living in UK for
9 months and the experience was awesome. Now I’m feeling brave enough to get
this chance and to achieve it.
So, welcome evorybody, I fancy you to live with me this experience. I’m
gonna share with all of you my new life in the US. I’m sure it will be plenty
of nice moments and also worse moments, but it will be easier with your
company!
